Working out the right wedding cake size
Wedding cake serving counts can be confusing because bakeries use different slice sizes. The two most common references are:
- Wedding-size slice — a thin 1-inch by 2-inch by 4-inch finger of cake. This is what most bakeries quote when they say a 10-inch round "serves 38".
- Party-size slice — a wider 1.5-inch by 2-inch slice (roughly half again as much cake per person). Good for a casual dessert or if the cake is the main sweet.
We default to wedding-size because it's the most common bakery quote standard and matches what guests actually eat after a meal. If your cake is doing double duty as dessert AND favour, switch to party-size.
Round vs square tiers
Square tiers feed about 30% more guests for the same diameter because there's no waste in the corners. They look more architectural and modern. Round tiers are the classic look, and easier to cut cleanly in long lines at a busy reception.
Should I order a smaller cake plus a sheet cake?
Yes — many couples order a smaller display cake (say, two or three tiers) and have the bakery prepare a matching kitchen sheet cake behind the scenes. Guests get the same cake, you get the photogenic centrepiece, and the cost per serving drops by 30–50%. If your venue allows it, this is the most cost-effective option for events over 150 guests.
How many tiers do I need?
- Up to 40 guests — single tier looks generous and is easy to cut.
- 40–80 guests — two tiers (typically 6″ + 8″ or 8″ + 10″).
- 80–150 guests — three tiers, the classic wedding cake silhouette.
- 150+ — four tiers, or three tiers plus a sheet cake.
Don't forget about the top tier
Some couples save the top tier to freeze and eat on their first anniversary. If that's your plan, factor an extra tier into your guest count — otherwise everyone will be eating cake from one tier less than you ordered.
How far in advance to order
Most wedding bakeries book up 4–6 months in advance for peak season (October–April in Australia, April–September in the Northern Hemisphere). Get your booking deposit in as soon as you have a guest-count estimate — you can finalise the design later.
