Why themed table names instead of numbers?

Table numbers do the job, but they're transactional — guests look up "Table 7" on the seating chart, find their seat, and that's it. Themed table names invite a moment of conversation, give your event a sense of personality, and make for better photographs when the table number signs are styled as part of the decor.

Themes also let you sequence guests deliberately. The bridal party and parents can sit at the most evocative table; family elders can sit at the table named after a meaningful place; closest friends at the one with the inside joke.

Popular themes (and when to use them)

  • Flowers — works for almost any wedding. Pairs beautifully with floral centerpieces and matches a romantic, garden-party aesthetic.
  • Travel destinations — perfect if the couple loves to travel or met abroad. Group tables by continent or by trips you've taken together.
  • Wine regions or grape varieties — suits formal, vineyard, and dinner-focused receptions. Bonus: serves as a subtle drink menu prompt.
  • Romantic films — for movie buffs. Works especially well at black-tie or cinema-themed weddings.
  • Cocktails — playful and modern. Pair each table sign with a signature drink card.
  • Famous authors or books — for couples who met in a literature class, work in publishing, or love books.
  • Words of love — short emotional words ("Always", "Forever", "Devotion"). Beautiful in calligraphy.
  • Custom — the strongest option. Use places, songs, dates, in-jokes — anything specific to your relationship.

How many table names do I need?

Match the number of dinner tables. Don't forget to include any extra tables — sweetheart table, gift table, cake table, kids' table — and check whether the venue is providing those signs separately.

Tips for printing and displaying

  • Print table names in at least 80pt type on the sign — guests need to read them from across the room.
  • Make the signs double-sided so people can see them from both sides of the table.
  • Use matte cardstock rather than glossy — glossy reflects camera flashes badly in photos.
  • Set the signs slightly off-centre on the table so they don't block the centrepiece — about 4-5 inches from the edge.
  • Keep a paper "table number → guest list" cheat sheet for your coordinator. Don't make them memorise 18 themed names.

Should I include a description on each sign?

Optional, but charming. A small line under the name explaining why ("Bali — where we got engaged in 2023") gives guests something to read and starts conversations across the table. Keep it to one sentence or it stops being decoration and starts feeling like a museum label.
